Book Summary

For well over a century, the novels of James Fenimore Cooper have thrilled the readers of two continents.  He revealed a new world of romance and adventure to Europe; for Americans he captured the danger and excitement of their early history.

The Last of the Mohicans is perhaps the best known and most popular of Cooper's works.  It centers around simple, naively drawn characters; but as the action unfolds, the noble and resourceful Hawkeye and his loyal Indian allies, Chingachgook and Uncas--as well as the crafty, evil Magua--all attain the stature of epic figures from an heroic age.

This book has become one of the enduring classics of American literature.  The reason:  it is one of the most exciting books ever written.  Every page shows the hand of a supremely gifted storyteller whose art is revered by such masters as Dumas, Balzac, and Conrad.
