Book Summary
Pioneer American Gardening is a collection of stories our of America's horticultural history contributed by the forty-one states whose 250,000 federated gardeners constitute the National Council of State Garden Clubs. The subject dealt with in each is its author's choice, as being representative of his state's share in creating the national garden.
Pioneer American Gardening presents its stories under seven headings, the names of the National Council Regions into which the contributing states are organized: New England, Central Atlantic, South Atlantic, Central, South Central, Rocky Mountain, and Pacific Coast. The State Federations forming each of these Regions generally have similar climatic, topographical, and soil conditions to contend with, so that horticultural developments in one could be expected to contribute similar advances in one or more of the others. There are notable exceptions to this apparently reasonable arrangement, but in general the rule holds good and is a source of pride to the related localities.
