Book Summary

It is a pleasure to introduce a new edition of the very first of Kipling's Just So Stories, How the Whale Got His Throat, and this is a very good place to start if you wish to publish new editions of these marvelous tales.  Kipling must have thought highly of it to place it ahead of all the other Just So Stories, and we think highly of it.

We are always surprised to learn that some whales are the largest animals that have ever lived.  This is worth knowing about.  It would be nice to know how and why whales got to be so large, but Kipling doesn't tell us this.  Instead, Kipling tells us how a man in infinite-resource-and-sagacity kept the whale from eating up all the fish in the sea.  This is a lesson dinosaurs never learned, so there aren't any dinosaurs left for us to look at.

It was kind of the mariner in this story to save the whale from eating up all the fish in the ocean, and it is nice to know that people sometimes do kind things and wise things.
