Book Summary
Visitors to Williamsburg today step back across the bridge of years to a city that was--for eight vigorous decades preceding and during the American Revolution--the capital of Virginia. Buildings, furnishings, fences, gardens, and public greens appear much as they did in the eighteenth century.
Since 1926, when the first colonial house was acquired, the American past has been brought to life in an area nearly a mile in length. Visitors will see the neat, weather-boarded houses of colonial days, with their broad-based chimneys. They will also see a wealth of handsome English and American furnishings in the many buildings open to the public.
All these efforts, major and minor, combine to offer a laboratory in which the life and times of Washington, Jefferson, George Mason, Patrick Henry, George Wythe, Peyton Randolph, and other leaders--and of ordinary people, too--may be better understood.
